What we Believe

St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church was established in 1909 by the grace of God and the determination of a progressive group of Christians.

They saw the need to establish an English-speaking Lutheran church in Sheboygan as an alternative to the prevailing German language churches in this area. The new and present church was designed and built during the tenure of Rev. Louis Huber and was dedicated on May 25, 1969.

What we beleive continued…

We believe in the triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Matt. 28:19)

We believe that Jesus Christ is true God, God’s only Son, and true man, who was sent into the world to save humanity and all creation from sin, death, and the power of the devil. We believe that through Christ’s death and resurrection He has destroyed sin, death, and the power of the devil. (Jn. 1:1, Jn 10:30, Col. 2:9, Jn. 3:16, Jn. 1:14, Phil. 2:6-8, 1 Jn. 4:9-10, 1 Jn. 3:8, Rom. 6:9-10, Heb. 2:14-15, 1 Cor. 15:55-57)

We believe that we are justified and saved from sin, death, and the power of the devil by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We believe that our good works do not save us, but that they are a fruit or result of the faith given to us. (Eph. 2:8-9, Rom. 3:23-24, Rom. 5:1, Rom. 6:23, Col. 1:13-14, Titus 3:5, James 2:17-18, Eph. 2:10, Gal. 5:22-23)

We believe that the Bible, or the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the true Word of God that is inspired by God and inerrant, revealing God’s perfect and holy will to the Church. (2 Tim. 3:16-17, Heb. 4:12, 2 Pet. 1:20-21, Jn. 17:17, Psalm 119:105)

We believe that, with the Word of God, the Sacraments are the foundation of the Church. Holy Baptism, the Lord’s Supper/Holy Communion, and Holy Absolution create saving faith and nourish and strengthen saving faith. The Sacraments bring us into communion with God and with one another. (Acts 2:42, Titus 3:5, Acts 2:38, Mt. 26:26-28, 1 Cor. 10:16-17, Jn. 6:53-56, Jn. 20:22-23, James 5:16, 1 Jn. 1:9, Gal. 3:27-28, Eph. 4:4-6)

We believe that God has given the charge to the Church to share the Gospel with our community and the rest of the world through our words and actions. (Mt. 28:18-20, Mark 16:15, Acts 1:8, Rom. 10:14-15, 2 Cor. 5:20, Mt. 5:14-16)

We believe that on the Last Day Christ will come again to raise the dead back to new and eternal life, and will also restore all of creation back to perfection, where God’s people will dwell with Him forever. (Acts 1:11, 1 Cor. 15:51-52, Rom. 8:19-21, Rev. 21:1, 2 Pet. 3:13, Rev. 21:3-4, Psalm 23:6)
